FaceBooks Ads looks like an interesting alternative or supplement to Google AdWords.
I stumbled into a hosting provider called NewServers.
They offer hourly rental and fast provisioning of dedicated hardware (not VPSes). Looking at pricing, you can get 2 servers with hardware RAID, a private network, and a hardware firewall for less than $300/month.
I ran across this interesting article panning Google’s MapReduce and its inferiority to traditional data processing using time honored database techniques.
In the comments, there was a link to this presentation from 2001 about how the database community is “doomed” if it doesn’t change its attitude.
